Farewell to 2016
Look forward to the change! For now, we share some links from 2016, and dates for January events,
During the holiday To Become Two, the exhibition project by Alex Martinis Roe, will remain open except for the days of 24-26 December 2016 and 31 December 2016 - 1 January 2017. Please also pause to appreciate Age Lines, a small yet delicately put-together exhibition organized by Casco Curatorial Fellow Staci Bu Shea and in dialogue with Roe’s To Become Two. As well as making a visit to Casco, stop in to our neighbor BAK to see Learning Laboratories. We in the Utrecht art field are proud to be able to share these solid and thought-provoking works with you!
Looking back in brief & with links
Despite our ongoing commitment to un-learn “busyness” and the capitalist logic of productivity – accumulation and competition – looking back Casco has found ourselves being rather “busy.” However, we hope this has taken the forms of commitment, collective struggle, and our claim for joy and we are now looking forwards to a more thorough time for reflection during the holidays. For now, we would like to share with you some links that have come out of our activities in this turbulent if not dynamic year of 2016.
A blog for We Are The Time Machines: Time and Tools for Commoning, project exhibition and study program at Casco (15 Nov 2015 - 13 Mar 2016). We highly recommend the audio recording of the “Commoning” Forum series!
How Institutions Think, a symposium (Feb 24–27, 2016) at LUMA Arles, organized by a number of art/curatorial educational institutions, where Casco director Binna Choi and artist Annette Krauss contributed to the dialogue with a presentation of our ongoing collective project Site for Unlearning: Art Organization.
Parasite Lottery, a pilot collective lottery system for art organizations in the Netherlands and their communities, initiated by Wok the Rock, developed together with the Casco team, tried out with Platform BK, Das Spectrum, and Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam. Please listen to the music especially composed and performed for ‘Parasite Lottery’ by Frau (Leilani Hermiasih). You can also order special editions of the vinyl via Casco’s bookshop here!
A new website by (Un)usual Business (UB), initiated by Casco with Kritische Studenten Utrecht, and now a forum for the UB research collective where essays and case studies on community economies are shared. It includes an essay by Nuraini Juliastuti on the Indonesian practice of Arisan, an inspiration for Parasite Lottery.
Read all about the 11th Gwangju Biennale: The Eighth Climate (What Does Art Do?) in which Binna Choi contributed as part of the curatorial team, Casco joined as a Fellow, and Yolande van der Heide (Casco) and Steyn Bergs (now Casco affiliated) participated in the forum To All the Contributing Factors. Blog highlight! A subjective, singular introduction by every participating artist to each of their practices and a list of over one hundred amazing fellow art organizations.
An ongoing joint publishing effort by Casco and Open! Platform for Art, Culture and the Public Domain, under the title Commonist Aesthetics. The latest contributions include an essay by Tom Holert who also curated the Learning Laboratories project and one by Geert Lovink.
While looking back, we are also looking forwards. We are fixing – and mending – the Casco plan for 2017. This plan might involve a lot of publications. Above all, the plan will entail a structural reinvention of what we do and how we do it to reflect upon our (un)learning processes as we continue to intensify our commitment to imagining and practicing commoning. Please stay tuned for our official announcement in the New Year! Meanwhile, we would like to invite you to mark a number of dates on your calendar for our forthcoming events at Casco, including:
