Last chance to see Army of Love and The Library of Unread Books!, through Sunday, 25 February

A reminder that Sunday, 25 February is the last day to see our double project-exhibitions Army of Love with Dora García and Ingo Niermann and The Library of Unread Books by Heman Chong and Renée Staal.

On your way to visit us (again), read art historian Liesbeth Visee’s piece for Metropolis M, in which she reflects on the current exhibition phenomenon of presenting libraries and books as cultural and political objects. Highlighting The Library of Unread Books, Visee emphasizes the socio-political potential of book collections. Metropolis M recently also re-published a conversation between artist Hinrich Sachs and Army of Love’s Ingo Niermann, which originally appeared in 2016 right before the Army of Love Introductory event at Casco.

You can still contribute to the Army of Love collective bibliography by emailing Staci. You can also drop by Casco to donate a book to The Library of Unread Books project and become a life-long member of the Library.

Introducing Hop Hope Hof on Sunday, 25 February

Casco and Utrecht-based artist Merel Zwarts invite you – and your children! – to enroll in Hop Hope Hof, a course that consists of workshops for and by children, in which we jointly explore the possibilities of the Abraham Dolehof and strengthen our sense of neighbourhood. On Sunday, 25 February from 14:00 to 16:00 hrs we will introduce the project. In this first meeting the program will be explained, and participants can get to know each other. Moreover, it will provide an opportunity for participants to explore the Abraham Dolehof through games and mutual (inter)actions. After the introduction, the meetings will take place across four editions of the Cultural Sunday in Utrecht.

Bay Library in the Possibility Room, through Sunday, 25 February

Bay Library is a travelling, non-lending library of artist books, independent publications, and zines from Vietnamese artists. Bay, which translates to “flying,” refers to both the books’ physical journey and the journey the mind takes when reading. It is a reference to the library’s transient existence, as well as the possibilities that open up when artists’ work is shared. Using pop-up reading events in combination with artist film screenings, Bay Library, a partner project of the Vietnam Artists’ Book Project, promotes contemporary artists from Vietnam by showing the range of work being produced. A selection of Bay Library titles are on view in the Possibility Room until Sunday, 25 February. The event is organized by Casco intern Maria Sowter.

“Luminous Hidden Images,” a lecture by Laura U. Marks at Hold Me Now – Feel and Touch in an Unreal World, Studium Generale Rietveld Academie, Wednesday, 7 March

Laura U. Marks will give a lecture titled “Luminous Hidden Images” at Studium Generale Rietveld Academie, for one of the “preliminary programs” on Wednesday, 7 March, 13:30 hrs (Rietveld Gym, Fred. Roeskestraat 96, Amsterdam).

Laura U. Marks’ theory of haptic visuality within intercultural cinema was the inspiration for Optic to Haptic Cinema (OH Cinema), an infrastructural experiment established during the exhibition phase of Casco’s transition to Casco Art Institute: Working for the Commons, 27 May to 16 July 2017.

In affinity with one another, Casco and Studium Generale Rietveld Academie will co-host Marks’ lecture and Casco curator Staci Bu Shea will moderate the conversation after the talk. Marks will sketch how humans’ intimate sensory experiences can assist a creative becoming with the cosmos through embodied thinking, ecology, and the process philosophies of Mulla Sadra, who wrote, “what are perceived by the five senses are luminous hidden images existing in another world.”

Joining the NEDxPO2018 Olympic culture program in the year of PyeongChang 2018, organized by the Dutch embassy in Korea

NEDxPO2018 is the Olympic culture program organized by the Dutch embassy in Korea, together with the Mondriaan Fund and the Creative Industries Fund NL, in the year of the 2018 Winter Olympics. Casco is joining the program by organizing a day-long itinerant exhibition Eurasian Steps – From Amsterdam to Seoul via Athens on Saturday, 30 June. As spring arrives, you’ll hear more about it from us!

We received over a hundred enthusiastic responses to our Open Call for three new positions on the Casco team. We are now in conversation with some of the applicants whose experiences, passions, and skills best fit with the current needs of Casco. We would humbly like to thank all the applicants.

Finally, while settling into our new name Casco Art Institute: Working for the Commons, in spring we will announce our new identity and website, as well as new projects and modes of working along with the newly empowered team in its new configuration.

Decolonizing Art Institutes from a Labor Point of View

Yet, doesn’t this colonial scene also ring true for contemporary art institutions, which in fact present post-colonial critical works? These same and often Western institutions determine the conditions in which colonial critical works are shown, how objects are shown, in which taste or style they are presented, and all in conversation with the structures of power that allow for the house, the gallery and so forth to exist in the first place.

Highlighting their experiences working in the Arts Collaboratory network and the Site for Unlearning (Art Organization) project with artist Annette Krauss, Casco's Binna Choi and Yolande van der Heide reflect on various histories of colonial heritage, alternative modes of labor and labor relations, and organizing art institutes differently, in the text 'Decolonizing Art Institutes from a Labor Point of View', their contribution to Issue 35 of On Curating: Decolonizing Art Institutions.

With these words, we are closing our year in transition from Casco - Office for Art, Design and Theory, to Casco Art Institute: Working for the Commons.

We will take a short winter break from Friday, 22 December 2017 until Friday, 5 January 2018. Our current exhibitions Army of Love and The Library of Unread Books will be open again from the weekend of Saturday, 6 January.

Drawn In Drawn Out, Studying the Commons
