Two steps back till unrise
Casco is pleased to present a one night programme of videos and films by Nina Könnemann and Romana Schmalisch.
Compiled by the artists through an ongoing discussion around the shared sensibilities within their practices, the programme juxtaposes their works alongside one another, looking for common points of interest. Most striking is the artists’ approaches to the representation of specific places through a subjective viewpoint. The programme moves through a succession of public places, ranging from a single frame animation of a mud hut in Madegascar, to the Museé d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris and the fall out of the Love Parade in Berlin. The artists’ direct responses to spaces use a variety filmmaking techniques that are often improvised, exploring ways of handling the camera and unusual perspectives that are sometimes disorientating, looking not only at how spaces are represented, but at how they are experienced.
Nina Könnemann is based in Berlin and Munich. Recent exhibitions include solo shows at Galerie Daniel Buchholz, Cologne (2006), Cubitt, London (2004), and Galerie Karin Gunther (2004).
Romana Schmalisch is based in Berlin and Maastricht and is currently a researcher at the Jan van Eyck Academie, Maastricht. Recent exhibitions include Galerie Sies & Höke, Düsseldorf (2006), Galerie Ben Kaufmann, Munich (2006), Agentur, Amsterdam (2006), and “Differences – Art as a Film Form”, Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zürich (2005).
