How one can leave our beloved ones with such joy?

1 November 2013, 19:00–22:00 / Casco HQ
Meeting point at 19:00 hrs: Casco Storefront at Voorstraat 88, Utrecht. From here, we will walk to Labre. The event is free but requires a reservation by emailing us.

As part of the project How to Live Together and in collaboration with neighboring living group Labre, Casco organizes an intimate evening with artists Christian Nyampeta and Aimée Zito Lema.

On 1 November, living group Labre opens their communal kitchen to us. Here, Christian Nyampeta will present his new visual essay Anachoresis (2013, 25 min) on the subject of his recent journey of “return” to Rwanda. Aimée Zito Lema joins the gathering with her latest film Otros Lugares/Other Places (2012, 30 min), which reflects on the exiling of members of artists’ families from Argentina in the 1970s. Following the screenings, the two artists engage in a public conversation.

While both artists work with design as an artistic tool, and have intense engagements with communities, in these photographic and film works they delve into the solitary and contemplative space of the unsayable. Against overwhelming social and political upheavals this space allows for traumas, memories, and personal journeys of inquiry to be renegotiated in visual narratives.

With Zito Lema and Nyampeta we would like to feel out and discuss artistic urges to make such works. The conversation following considers these works in relation to both the physical and “historical” distance from the context of events, how these events in turn speak to us, and how the solitary works remediate modes of working – and living – together.
