Spacemakers

31 August–31 October 2004 / Casco HQ
Opening: Friday, August 20, 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m

There are countless project spaces, artist groups and collectives that realize influential projects and programs outside the institutional framework with little money or space. Spacemakers focuses on the globally expanding “do-it-yourself” ethos by presenting an international cross-section of methods and strategies. For this occasion, fifteen independent initiatives were invited to present themselves and their programs and strategies within the space made available in der lothringer dreizehnhe. A common feature of these initiatives is a strong connection to the communities in which they live and an awareness of the role of art in a broader, international context of public space, media, pop culture and politics.

Colophon:

An exhibition organized by Courtenay Smith, curator, thirteen in Lorraine, and Brett Bloom, artist and member of the three-person collective, Temporary Services, Chicago.
