Our shared courtyard Abraham Dolehof will be one of the locations during the open air art manifestation Care Full. Organized by Art Utrecht in light of Utrecht’s 900 year of city rights, the historical ground will host works by artist duo P-K-K-P (also one of the exhibitors during Travelling Farm Museum 2022 Spring Collection) and our neighbor Ienke Kastelein (who’s work continues on her Very, Very Slow Walk in the Footsteps of Ursula, part of our exhibition New Habits in 2014).

Leaving Traces

what is here with me ?
who is here with me ?

Leaving Traces is a nomadic installation and performance by Parvaneh Karimi (1983, Iran) and Karen ( Vantvelt ) (1986 , Belgium). The duo P-K-K-P met each other in the Netherlands where they built a family bond, and by means of language, objects, and sensations attempt to step outside institutional boundaries and bring the intimacy of a home into a public environment.

In what is here with me ? they continue to search for a meeting place in which a city does not refuse to share but wants to give; where stories cross paths, where a passerby smells the (un)known, where an acquaintance greets a stranger. Acts form a city prior to bricks and buildings. Streets and cities are made of words and stories; like a sketch of a dream for a map. The past that has passed over a city is the fate of all the people who walk and cross its streets and alleys, in which stories are left behind. How do we make, discover, and care for these stories?

These stories, embracing all flaws, captured in clay as fractures, are transformed into registrations, cups, bowls, and plates, which seek to make the old stories of the city establish physical relationships in tangibility with hands and mouths. Eating in a city can bring someone closer to a city. Eating together, can bring people and stories closer together. When we make prints and food in a city, does it create a deep and close memory or connection to the place? Do we only make prints and food with great care in the cities where we feel grounded, where we want to connect, where we love?

Sporen van Ursula / Dwelling in Uncertainty

we are in this together

In Sporen van Ursula / Dwelling in Uncertainty, the Abraham Dolehof functions as a place of action – a sensory exploration of ourselves in resonance and reciprocity; we mirror the city in this courtyard, a place rooted in history with an ancient plane tree, mother of the court. It is a quiet place that once housed the Ursula Monastery, and where Ienke Kastelein has her studio in the former school that stands there, a frayed edge in the middle of the city. In this drift, experiences of space and time come together in a natural way. The underlying idea is that our memory is not only in our body/brain/DNA but also in the world around us.

We have a conversation in different languages – words, smells, sounds, movements. Silent conversations are interspersed with spoken word, smelling with tasting, walking with sitting. Each time takes on its own pace and rhythm, arising under the influence of weather, the spirit of the day, those present, casual encounters. It is like asking a question: what does it mean to be somewhere, to share a space with each other, in the city, as one body, in dialogue with the trees and plants, with the elements, void in the light of time, 900 years Utrecht in the bend of a river – maybe we are the water in the bed of a river of time. At the end we reflect on the walk – leave traces – thoughts, a memory card, a new coat for Ursula. The art of rooting in space and time.
