Open Call: three new team members in 2018

Head of Diverse Economies

3 days per week

Casco Art Institute: Working for the Commons maintains a living practice of a diverse economy (the term coined by feminist economists Julie Graham and Katherine Gibson) — an economy consisting of monetary and non-monetary exchange, such as public grants, voluntary commitments, mutual aid, commercial arrangement, and private sponsorship. By taking this view of our economic well-being, we aim to enrich and negotiate our commons vis-à-vis an increasingly financialized world.

The Head of Diverse Economies oversees the transactions in Casco’s diverse economies in order to support the institution’s viability, and actively stimulates its healthy enrichment to facilitate the smooth running of the institution’s activities in cooperation with the rest of the Casco team.

Responsibilities include:

  • Charting and taking care of the movement of transactions from a perspective of diverse economy. This includes budgeting (keeping track of monetary transactions) and managing the expectations, needs, and mutual responsibilities of different actors and stakeholders (non-monetary);
  • Extending and diversifying the relations of transaction;
  • Developing strategies and practices of enriching the relations of transaction, including new guidelines for wages and a new system of management (such as an open book system).

For this position, Casco expects you to have knowledge of the management of the financial-capitalist economy as well as of alternative economies. You should have experience in dealing with financial administration and fundraising. You value art and are able to articulate the values around art and art organizations in a wider cultural and social landscape. You enjoy collaboration, cooperative planning, and are good at both verbal and written communication.

The forms and conditions of contract for the above position will be discussed individually and Casco works with the CAO (collective labour agreement) suggested by the City Council of Utrecht. In general, the first contract for each role will be a maximum of one year, to be possibly followed by a long-term mutual engagement.

Curator of Language & Dissemination

4 days per week

Casco Art Institute: Working for the Commons will further strengthen its capacity for communication and dissemination in the coming years, in a sincere effort to reach out to new audiences and our existing communities alike. Casco actively seeks out modes of communication and translation for its works and knowledge, in order to connect and share with diverse publics — professional and non-professional, local and international, etc. Casco also innovates in publishing, both digital and in print. The Curator of Language & Dissemination develops and implements Casco’s communication strategies, tactics and plans.

Responsibilities include:

  • Developing and implementing the communication and dissemination plan (emailing, website, advertisement, and other new forms and media);
  • Developing and implementing new strategies for diversifying and broadening the publics (including the commoners);
  • Managing and maintaining the daily communication infrastructure, including Casco’s email account, recurring newsletter updates, and social media presence;
  • Planning and executing the dissemination of the ideas, the process and the outcomes of projects and institutional practice at Casco.

For this position, Casco expects you to have a strong affinity with the field of art and contemporary art as well as an investment in the development of the commons as discourse and practice. You have an excellent knowledge of both Dutch and English. You enjoy the process of articulation and translation of sometimes-complex ideas in comprehensible and accessible forms. You are creative in inventing new expressions and channels of communications, and passionate to connect with broad audiences.

The forms and conditions of contract for the above positions will be discussed individually and Casco works with the CAO (collective labour agreement) suggested by the City Council of Utrecht. In general, the first contract for each role will be a maximum of one year, to be possibly followed by a long-term mutual engagement.

Coordinator of Curatorial Logistics

3 days per week

Casco Art Institute: Working for the Commons develops several long-term artistic projects in parallel and in tandem with each other. Each of these projects involves the production of new art works and the organization of exhibitions, symposiums, workshops and other activities, and may require the organization of working groups, collaborations and partnerships. Further, individual projects generate encounters that need to be managed within the context of the goals of the project. The Coordinator of Curatorial Logistics oversees and structures these activities, gives them an order, plans for their realization, and accordingly coordinates labor, infrastructure, and facilities in support of the projects.

Responsibilities include:

  • Operational management;
  • Upholding an overview of the yearly activities as planned collectively;
  • Developing a timeline and spreadsheet for realization of the plan;
  • Coordinating activities and advising project curators and coordinators when there are multiple project activities;
  • Managing budgets;
  • Taking care of labor, infrastructure, and facilities.

For this position, Casco expects you to have an affinity with art and contemporary art production, including knowledge of material and immaterial production. You enjoy planning and organizing in cooperation and are able to multi-task. You also value details that can make a difference and you therefore pay attention to them.

The forms and conditions of contract for the above position will be discussed individually and Casco works with the CAO (collective labour agreement) suggested by the City Council of Utrecht. In general, the first contract for each role will be a maximum of one year, to be possibly followed by a long-term mutual engagement.
