Reading Pedagogies – Self-Organized Art Education for Sustaining Life

6 March–13 June 2025, 14:00–17:00 / University of Applied Arts Vienna, various locations

Masterseminar co-hosted by Annette Krauss (KKP) and Aline Hernández (Casco Art Institute: Working for the Commons)

In the seminar Reading Pedagogies, we examine artistic-educational experiments, their curricula and how they challenge routines of mainstream and dominant society. What is learned, and unlearned in these self-organized experiments? And how is community both practiced and challenged? What role does artistic engagement play? And who has access to these educational realities, and under what conditions?

Through the lens of three case studies, we collectively explore how to approach these educational processes, their visions, and conventions, while reflecting on each case study in relation to our own practices.

The case studies are:
School of Improper Education / Kunci Study Forum & Collective (Yogyakarta/ID): https://www.kunci.or.id/
Maiz/Das Kollektiv (Linz/Astria): https://www.maiz.at/en; https://www.das-kollektiv.at/
Centro Intercultural de Documentación / Ivan Illich (Cuernavaca/MX; hosted by Sofia Olascoaga): https://re-imagine-europe.eu/archive/resources_item/sonia-287-sofia-olascoaga/

The aim of this seminar is to collectively study a pedagogy-in-action, and to translate these findings in our respective lived realities. In this seminar we ask what materials we need to look at, in order to move closer to the experiences of actors involved in self-organised artistic-educational experiments and their everyday lives within school settings. How can we artistically approach these materials? What can we unlearn from these educational processes, their visions and conventions? And who is the ‘we’ anyway?
