This Our Economies film program looks at one aspect of the US and European entanglement with the market, exploring its ethics and codes through activist, artist-directed, and mainstream films. Given the long duration of screening, you are encouraged to bring some food and drinks to share for a “potluck” (or “American party”).
The films on view:
Predatory Tales, The Center for Urban Pedagogy, 2008, 18 min. Short excerpts from a video by and about people caught up in the US housing crisis, using puppets to tell their stories.
Crisis in the Credit System, Melanie Gilligan, 2007, 38 min. A group of investment bankers participates in a role-playing session, revealing the secret language of the market and the wide effects of the credit crisis.
Wall Street, Oliver Stone, 1987, 125 min.
A 1980s take on ethics (or lack of) in Wall Street, pitting white-collar greed against blue-collar values in true Hollywood fashion.

In response to the global economic crisis, Lize Mogel and Casco initiate the collective and participatory mapping/research project Our Economies. The public is invited to contribute their own visualizations of the crisis to a map archive. The questions are asked: “what does the global economic crisis look like?”; “Can it be located?”; “How does it affect you directly?”; “What are ‘economic indicators’ in your own life?”; These mappings draw upon our own personal and local expertise, rather than that of economists and political strategists whose voices are most often heard in discussing this crisis. The public can participate in the project at a “mapping station” at Casco, where these visualizations will be on display. Public mapping workshops are also held on Wednesday and Thursday each week from 12:30 to 13:30 and from 17:00 to 18:00.
A working group of local researchers, artists, designers, and activists including Kees Hudig, Lize Mogel and others further research themes that are uncovered in the public map archive. This research and selections from the public archive are collected in a newspaper publication to be distributed by Casco in May 2009.
