Alternative space-making with Sohrab Kashani + Video-screening curated from the Sazmanab Video Library
Thursday, 3 October 2024, 18:00–20:00 / Casco HQ
Lange Nieuwstraat 7, 3512 PA, Utrecht
Organized in the context of our current exhibition Hidden Arts: What do we make when no one sees us.
Join us for a presentation and screening night that explores the activities of Sazmanab and Rabt, two artist-run spaces in Iran. Sazmanab is a curatorial platform that was formerly one of Tehran’s longest-running art spaces, focusing on exhibitions, workshops, archiving, and organizing the city’s first open-call residency program. Rabt is an art and research studio that centers on sonic and collaborative practices, with an emphasis on long-term projects.
Presented by Sohrab Kashani, (co-)initiator of these spaces and HKU MAFA second-year student, the event will begin with a talk on alternative space-making, focusing on the hidden labor, strategies, and workarounds that sustain these initiatives. Aligning with the themes of the Hidden Arts program, Sohrab will share insights into their history of collective work and their curatorial and organizational challenges. The evening will also feature a screening of video works by Iranian artists, both from Iran and the diaspora, curated from the Sazmanab Video Library.
In addition to the above, selected publications from Sazmanab’s library, along with fragments from the Sazmanab Digital Archive—including recordings of past talks, gatherings, and scanned library materials—will be available at Casco’s library for the remainder of the Hidden Arts exhibition.
