Past Imperfect (working title) is a project by Bik Van der Pol (artists Liesbeth Bik and Jos van der Pol) for Casco. The project examines to what extent radical choices and events influence the course of (art)history. Can these radical events actually be traced or have they intentionally or accidentally disappeared into history? The project results in a publication which is due for release in Summer 2004.

La Commune
Peter Watkins, 2000, 345 min., English subtitles
Peter Watkins is one of the most important filmmakers of his generation. He makes compassionate, uncompromising films which challenge cinematographic conventions and question the way in which history and the media operate. La Commune refers to the revolutionary government in Paris during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. The film is a 6 hour reconstruction of a dark episode in French history which is conspicuously lacking from the history books.

The Battle of Orgreave
A project by Jeremy Deller, director Mike Figgis, 2001, 60 min., English dialogue, produced by Artangel and Channel 4
The Battle of Orgreave highlights a difficult moment in British history: the violent struggle between the Orgreave miners and the police on 18 June 1984. Artist Jeremy Deller took it upon himself to attempt to organize the reconstruction of this battle. By putting ex-miners on the side of the police in the film, Deller intelligently deals with the collective trauma.

The Five Obstructions
Lars von Trier & Jørgen Leth, 2003, 93 min., Dutch subtitles
The Five Obstructions is a remake of the short Perfect Human which Jørgen Leth made in 1967. In 2000, Von Trier challenged Leth to remake the film. Von Trier subjected Leth to a number of stimulating rules so as to force him to re-examine the points of departure and characters of his original film. The film is a game of booby traps and devilish witticisms.
