Talk about Seaweed and Coastal Culture with Gatari Surya Kusuma

12 September, 16:00 / Casco HQ

Join us this Thursday afternoon for a talk by Gatari Surya Kusuma. Gatari will share about her research on how images make sense of and document the ecological crisis through stories of seaweed and coastal culture. This presentation aligns with the upcoming Assembly Whose Ocean? on ocean justice, which we are organizing with Utrecht University.

Ecological crisis knowledge is not evenly distributed across countries or regions, and sometimes, the situation can be challenging to see clearly. Gatari’s research project uses images to document how the ecological crisis unfolds, including the relationship between humans and nature, through the perspective of spirituality and the intersection of myth, folklore, and firsthand experience.

This presentation is part of a documentation and knowledge preservation project that started in mid-2023 in Nusa Penida, Bali, Indonesia. Alongside Gatari’s talk, there will be a showcase of graphic recordings by Ario Fazrien and a photo zine by Eri Rama Putra.
