At Casco (departure point) and other locations

On Saturday 16 May 2009 Casco – Office for Art, Design and Theory presents a collaborative outdoor performance Operational Play initiated by artist Hwa-Yeon Nam. A group of participants who responded to an open call perform a minimal script consisting of characters and backdrops whose names are named after significant military operations since WWII with their own interpretation of the script and collaborative dynamics. The performance of six acts takes place in six different locations across the city, including the space of Casco (Nieuwekade 213-215, Utrecht) as the point of departure.

As part of the project The Antagonistic Link, on view through 17 May at Casco, Operational Play highlights the distance between our daily lives and armed conflicts, which seem to constitute an autonomous reality created by national and transnational power structures on which the people living in a rapidly globalizing world have no influence, despite access to media and information. At the same time it is also an attempt to narrow down such distances with aesthetic, theatrical, and choreographic tools as well as a form of collectivity.
